Ad-people (apparently in great numbers) used to think that the best way to get people into something was to depict other people with zonked-out smiles while standing in the general area of the product in question.
These smiles are almost never quite right-looking.
This is the period of history that also brought us widespread mandatory psycho-surgery.
Some illustrators just didn’t know how to paint men. They have the wrong idea in their heads of what women want. Carol Channing over there in the blue trunks is not what women want.
